In March
Matthew conducted the Hangleton Band into Runners-Up
position at the Regional Contest in Stevenage,
performing The Dark Side of
the Moon by Paul Lovatt-Cooper.
This means that the band have qualified for the
National Finals (see below) for the first time in 22
years.
Also, in March Matthew entered the National Association of Brass Band Conductors competition and won the Midlands heat conducting Newstead Band in a performance of Paganini Variations by Philip Wilby. In June Matthew competed against the winners of the other heats in the National Final and won, conducting Lowry Sketchbook by Philip Wilby, with the Virtuosi GUS Band. He is the NABBC “Conductor of the Year 2008” and inaugural winner of the Roy Newsome Challenge Shield.

Tête à Tête Opera Festival are mounting work-in-progress performances of Matthew’s opera The Diary, performed by Heather Cairncross, Lawrence White, Adam Swayne and Tom Norrell, directed by Bill Bankes-Jones and produced by James Turnbull.
